Perched at an astounding altitude of over 4000 mts above sea level, Chandrashila offers a panoramic 360 degree view of the some of the very majestic Himalayan peaks including Nanda Devi, Bandarpunch, Chaukhamba and Kedar Peak.
A wide variety of landscapes, dense rhododendron forest, highest temple of Lord Shiva,Tungnath Temple and panoramic views of the Himalayan range from Chandrashila Summit are key highlights of this trek.
Chandrashila is a steep 1.5 kms trek from Tungnath temple which is a 3.5 kms trek from Chopta hill station. Chandrashila and Tungnath are covered with snow during the winters and also popular as winter treks.
Tip: You can only reach Chandrashila Top by trekking only. Though you can get Ponies till Tungnath Temple (except winters).
According to one of the popular legend, Chandrashila is the place where Lord Rama meditated after defeating Ravana. Another legend says that moon-god “Chandra” spent time here in penance. Chandrashila literally means “Moon Rock”. A temple dedicated to goddess Ganga is situated atop Chadrashila.
There is another small peak known as Ravan Shila as well, It is beleived that Ravana did tapasya over there to please Lord Shiva. It is also known as Rudramukhi as well, as one can see the face of Lord Shiva in the mountain.
