Chopta is famous for trekking as there are many trekking routes in the region. One of the best treks for the beginners, Chopta – Tungnath – Chandrashila Trek is counted among the fabulous weekend treks of the Garhwal Himalayas.
It is an extremely picturesque trek in the Garhwal Himalayas and it can be undertaken throughout the year. If a snow trekking experience is what you are looking for then you can go on this trek in the months of December to March.
You would be introduced to the beauty of the Himalayas and get to know about the flora and fauna of this region. This trek would also start your lifelong tryst with trekking in the Himalayas.
Trek Distance: 3.5 Kms (one side)
Tungnath is known as third temple of Panch Kedar and is highest temple of Lord Shiva at 3700 mts height. Entire trek till Tungnath Temple is well maintained by cemented trek.

Trek Distance: 5 Kms (one side)
To reach Chandrashila one has to reach Tungnath first. There is a steep climb to reach the summit of 4000 mts which offers 360 degree view of Himalayas. Trekking to Chandrashila can be quite difficult during snow but equally rewarding as well.

Food/water in Chopta during trekking: Carry your own water during the trek. There are some shacks in the trek where you can enjoy the hot tea with biscuits, maggie and lunch as well.
Note: They are mostly open during season time when Tungnath temple is open. Otherwise they are closed and trekkers are advised to carry backpacks with packed lunch, juice or water.
Pony/Porters in Chopta: Porters/Pony are available in Chopta during season time only from May to October (till the last day of closing ceremony at Tungnath Temple). During winters you will not find any porters or Ponies/horses due to snow.
